This interesting visit to the Royal
Jewelry Museum in Alexandria will show case 500 artifacts that belong to
Mohamed Ali Family. The artifacts of the museum date back to 1809. The
50-million Museum is considered one of the biggest Egyptian museums.
The Alexandria National Museum contains about 1,800 artifacts that narrate the
history of Alexandria throughout the ages, including the Pharaonic, Ptolemaic,
Roman, Coptic, Byzantine and Islamic eras. There are even some more modern
pieces which provide a sense of the richness of the court of Mohammed Ali and
his descendants till the 1952 Revolution. Mummies are shown in a special
underground chamber (basement).
Also, some of the items found during the archaeological underwater excavations
in Alexandria are now on the same floor as the Greco-Roman artifacts. |

Situated at the entrance of the
eastern harbor, Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria was one of the most important
defensive strongholds not only in Egypt but also in the Mediterranean Sea
coast. It formulated an important part of the fortification system of
Alexandria in the 15th century AD.
Parts of the remains of the lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient
World, can be seen in the construction of the old fort. Also located inside the
fort is the Naval Museum which contains artifacts from the Roman and Napoleonic
sea battles.
